    I’m not sure I ever ate “real food” until I visited the organic farm of  ecologist John Hamaker in Michigan.  Back in the ’70’s, he was reviving the use of mineral-rich glacial gravel dust to grow nutritionally superior vegetables of outstanding flavor. It was worth waiting my then-lifespan of 22 years to experience the inspiration of that visit! It didn’t take me long to start my own mineralized-organic garden (including fruit trees) in California, and I’ve not been without a garden in the 33 years since! I consider it my number one health essential. While all the elements of healthful living are of great importance, your own garden producing some of your own fresh, vitalizing food should be high on your list of essentials!

    Feed vegetables, salads, ground up bone and meat, or just nuts and vegetables three to four times per week. Feed fruits separately as a snack. I grind flax, sesame, sunflower seeds, mixing them with greens. Avocados are very good for pets, especially when served mixed with their favorite vegetables. Variety is very important. I hate the thought of having to give animal food to our pets, but they are carnivores. It does not have to be every day. Less is best.

    Most people have heard of raw cocoa—a.k.a. “chocolate.” Many people are hooked on that dark brown candy stuff. However, there is another kind of “chocolate”—it’s called “carob.” The carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) is native to the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, and can be found in the Middle East as well. Carob contains 352 mg of calcium per 100 g, among its many other nutritional benefits. Fresh carob pods are sometimes difficult to come by unless you live in a region where it is grown and/or sold. Depending on the variety, carob pods are usually harvested in the late summer and in the fall. There are some online resources that may offer “whole raw wildcrafted carob pods” or carob pods that have been “cut and sifted.” Although “raw carob powder” can be found at many health food stores, it may be slightly heated in processing. Real raw carob powder is darker and coarser than the heated version. If you are looking for one of Nature’s “other chocolates,” then consider giving carob a try!

    “Obtain appropriate exposure to sunshine and fresh air—20 to 40 minutes of generous skin exposure, while avoiding burning. Essential nutrients, including vitamin D, are formed when the skin is exposed to sunlight. This is necessary to ensure optimum calcium absorption and bone health as well as optimum immune function. By avoiding excess exposure to the sun, particularly at mid-day, we can avoid the damaging effects of sunburn. If adequate sun exposure is not possible, vitamin D supplementation is an option.”
